Weather: Sunny
Max Speed: 12.9 mph p (knots - unless stated otherwise)

After 2 not so good foil attempt and an easy 15 mile off roader on MTB it was time for some smart road bike non stop 40 miler, although the slightly windy conditions was off putting but the sun was blazing.
Target as always was PB's every 10 miles - 10, 20, 30, 40. Been tweaking, seat down 1cm and back 0.5cm with down tilt increased 2 degs, running tyres at max 100 psi.
I now have a small pad on my saddle which looks odd but works on these 3 hour non stop rides.
Amazingly the first 10 miles via Sproughton Bramford and Claydon matched my PB taking 46 mins, which includes a hard hill gave me much enthusiasm at it was windy. The new adjustments were working great and I had no bum ache at this stage.
The Ipswich bypass via the hospital and Bucklesham was gruelling cos the headwind increased, caught all lights / round bouts as the traffic was horrendous. Covid silence has long gone!
The phone app voice wasn't good news - as it said I was 3 mins down at 20 miles as I hit the junction for Trimley or Ipswich on the Old Felixstowe road. I knew no way could I PB 40 miles as my legs were jelling so cut the circuit to 30 miles turning right towards the old Shepherd and Dog pub. This road has a cycle track, so used it for a feed station but maintaining 14mph as the wind was behind me.
Heart rate was averaging 120 which is high for me after 20 miles and 90 mins in the saddle as I whizzed past Sainsbury. Phone app said I was 2 mins down for PB 30 milers so up the pace back along the bypass and luckily tagged 3 roadies riding 17mph along the flat stretch, so I stayed with them. Well please cos no way could I stay with anyone maintaining 17/19 mph for 2 or 3 miles back in March.
I now have the perfect bike fit setup + use SPD shoes in SPD clips with a full Carbon road and Shimano's - superlight yet I cant match my First MTB ride out back in March on my heavy MTB with toolkit bag, 2 waters and snacks with trainers and old school clippies. Phone app said I was still 2/3 mins down at 25 miles!
Since that first ride I have not been able to sustain that pace often. It must av been wind assisted. The long drag back along the Sproughton road cracked my resolve as it’s not possible to pull back 3 mins with 5 miles to go so selected spinning gears with high cadence to offset the jelly legs. Made it home just outside my 30 mile PB which is 2hr 16 mins with a 2hrs 19 mins. HR was good average dropped to 118, so maybe I could have tried harder. Calories were the usual 2840.
Amazingly again on a fast downhill stretch I cranked my old MTB to 34 mph yet the carbon only recorded 30 mph today! Again must have been wind assisted.
Think I will have to take the pro’s advise and start doing fast 10 miles every day instead of 30/40 miles twice per week as my pace has plateau.
